Week 1 TOPIK Study Update

Days until TOPIK Exam: 47

Welcome to my first weekly update on my journey towards the TOPIK exam!

As a Korean language tutor from Malaysia, achieving and maintaining a TOPIK 6 level is definitely important for me. Not only does it help me stay updated with the exam format and content, but it also allows me to provide the best guidance to my students. Many students and people often ask me why I retake the exam every time. I do this to ensure that the exam format remains consistent and to stay updated with any changes. This helps me provide the best guidance to my students.

This week, my main focus was on advanced grammar and reading comprehension. Let me show you what I studied, the resources I used, and my reflections on this week's progress.

Weekly Goals:

  1. Complete 3 grammars (pg49-51) of TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습

  2. Complete 3 sets of vocabulary (pg3-8) of TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습

  3. Practice listening skills through Korean News

Daily Summaries

Day 1 (May 27)

Focus: Grammar

Completed the first grammar section (pg49-50) from "TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습".

The exercises were challenging but very effective in reinforcing complex grammar rules. Need to review more examples for better understanding.

Day 2 (May 28)

Focus: Vocabulary

Studied the first set of vocabulary (pg3-5) from "TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습".

The vocabulary is in hangul order (ㄱㄴㄷ) so I started with ㄱ. I knew all the words already so it was more of a revision for me. Also, I heard a lot of good stuff about Anki flashcard but what works for me is always repetitive writing.

Day 3 (May 29)

Focus: Listening Practice

Listened to Korean news segments, focusing on comprehension and note-taking. I used Naver News and Korean dramas 😏

Day 4 (May 30)

Focus: Grammar

Completed the second grammar section (pg50-51) from "TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습".

More practice with grammar exercises is needed to fully grasp the nuances.

Day 5 (May 31)

Focus: Vocabulary

Studied the second set of vocabulary (pg5-6) from "TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습".

Consistent review is key. Incorporated some new words into sentences for better retention.

Day 6 (June 1)

Focus: Listening Practice

Continued listening to Korean news, focusing on different topics.

Exposure to various topics is helping improve overall comprehension. Need to increase the listening duration. Also with Korean dramas! (But at the background, so just the audio!)

Day 7 (June 2)

Focus: Grammar and Vocabulary Review

Reviewed all grammar sections and vocabulary sets studied during the week.

Reviewing everything in one session helped consolidate my learning. This time, I used Anki Flashcards and wrote some example sentences.

I had a really full week, but I still have to make sure I studied at least 10 minutes a day. On day where I practice listening, if you read what I did this week was, first practice I did Korean news listening and also watch one episode of Korean drama, and the second practice, I had the drama turned on at the background, I am not watching it, just listening to it! The reason why I really recommend this method is that, you are not really listening, you are just getting used to the speed, the nuances and the intonation of the language.

What I have been using:

  1. "TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습": This book is excellent for mastering advanced vocabulary and grammar.

  2. Anki Flashcards: Great for spaced repetition learning of vocabulary.

  3. Korean News Websites (e.g., Yonhap News): Regular listening to news segments helps improve comprehension and exposure to different topics.

Plans for Next Week:

Next week, I will focus on further enhancing my reading speed and accuracy. My goals are to:

  1. Complete the next 3 grammar sections (pg52-54) of "TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습".

  2. Complete the next 3 sets of vocabulary (pg9-14) of "TOPIK 대비 고급어휘·문법 활용연습".

  3. Continue practicing listening skills through Korean news and podcasts.

Stay tuned for next week's update, and feel free to share your own study tips and experiences in the comments below.

Happy studying!
