Comprehensive Preparation for the TOPIK II Exam

Vocabulary (어휘)

  • What to Memorize: Utilize TOPIK vocabulary books available in the market. They are largely similar; choose one that feels comfortable for memorization.

  • Accumulation Through Practice: Keep a vocabulary notebook for new words encountered in practice questions.

  • Memorization Techniques:

  • Browse through the vocabulary book or notebook.

  • Repetitive memorization of words from the notebook.

  • Recommended Word Counts:

  • Level 3: About 3500 words

  • Level 4: 4000 to 4500 words

  • Level 5: 5000 to 5500 words

  • Level 6: 6000 to 7000 words

Grammar (문법)

  • What to Memorize: Focus on TOPIK grammar books and the grammar index of textbooks.

  • Critical Reminder: Mastery of grammar for levels 1, 2, and 3 is crucial as they account for approximately 80% of the grammar tested in TOPIK.

Listening (듣기)

  • Levels 3 and 4: Begin with elementary listening practice, advancing only after achieving over 95% comprehension. Avoid jumping directly to intermediate and advanced levels.

  • Levels 5 and 6: Start with intermediate and advanced listening practices, dedicating at least two hours daily.

  • Practice Enhancement:

  • Initially, listen to the recording four times.

  • Treat the transcript as a reading text, clarifying any unfamiliar words or grammar.

  • Practice reading aloud the listening script 3-4 times for fluency.

  • Re-listen to the actual listening test 2-3 times, aiming for full comprehension.

Reading (읽기)

  • Vocabulary is Key: Enhance vocabulary through practice and memorization.

  • Refinement Over Quantity: Focus on thoroughly understanding a limited set of practice tests rather than superficially covering many.

Writing (쓰기)

  • Level 3: Proficiency in questions 51 and 53 is minimum.

  • Level 4: Mastery of questions 51, 52, and 53, with basic ability in question 54.

  • Levels 5 and 6: Proficiency in questions 51 to 54 is necessary.

  • Avoid Outdated Practices: Practice with recent TOPIK writing prompts, as older models might not reflect the current exam format.

  • Essential Grammar and Practice: Memorize essential grammar for fill-in-the-blank questions and engage in extensive practice.

Final Tips

  • Distributed Learning: Utilize fragmented time throughout the day for vocabulary memorization, such as while waiting for a bus or during breaks. Avoid lengthy, uninterrupted study sessions for vocabulary and grammar.

  • Selective Listening: Focus solely on TOPIK listening materials to avoid distractions and ensure relevant practice.

  • Quality Over Quantity: In both reading and listening practices, depth of understanding trumps the number of practice tests completed.
